The New York Film Festival has announced that its closing night film will be “Flight,” which stars Denzel Washington as a pilot who saves almost all his passengers after a nearly miraculous crash landing– after his substance abuse helps cause the issues in the first place.

This will be Washington’s second out of control vehicle film in two years; he starred in 2010’s “Unstoppable” as a man working to stop a freewheeling, unmanned train. He also recently starred in “Safe House” with Ryan Reynolds.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the Paramount Pictures film’s also includes Melissa Leo, Kelly Reilly, John Goodman and Don Cheadle. It will screen at the New York festival on Oct. 14, and open in general release Nov. 2.

The New York Film Festival is running through Oct. 14 at Lincoln Center.

Tyler Perry talks ‘Alex Cross’ and ‘Morgan Freakin’ Freeman’

“It’s always been easier for me to have a costume to hide behind, but here I had nothing,” says Tyler Perry, who not only sheds his Madea character to take on the lead in Alex Cross, but also leaves the directing to someone else and delivers lines written by someone other than himself – a rarity in his universe.

The worldwide best-selling novels of James Patterson return to the big screen on October 19 with Alex Cross. Resuming the title character played by Morgan Freeman in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider, Tyler Perry is the seminal young homicide detective in this taut, exciting origin story where Alex Cross meets his match in a ferociously skilled serial killer.

The two face off in a psychological struggle of epic proportions, where Cross is pushed to the edge of his moral and physical limits. Alex Cross stars an ensemble cast that includes Matthew Fox, Carmen Ejogo, Edward Burns and Jean Reno.

“It was challenging, a bit frightening, but usually that’s when I’ll take things on,” the filmmaker said during interviews for the film over the weekend in Los Angeles. “If there’s a bit of fear, I’ll challenge myself to go as far as I can.”

In Perry’s Alex Cross, the police detective and psychologist faces serial killer Michael “The Butcher” Sullivan (Matthew Fox), an ex-operative who predetermines every move made by the cops in their attempts to catch him.

And now for the elephant in the room…

Moviegoers have only ever seen Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross on the big screen. The veteran actor made his mark on the character in 1997’s Kiss the Girls, opposite Monica Potter, and 2001’s Along Came a Spider with Ashley Judd.

Perry says he is well aware of those big shoes he had to fill.
