‘The Butler’ tops ‘One Direction’ at box office

Lee Daniels’ The Butler was served another first-place finish over the Labor Day weekend.

 

The film starring Forest Whitaker as a veteran White House butler earned $20.2 million in the top spot at the box office for the third weekend in a row, bringing the Weinstein Co. historical drama’s domestic haul to $79.5 million.

 

Sony’s boy-band music documentary One Direction: This Is Us opened in second place with $18.5 million.

 

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Monday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Hollywood.com, are:
