Acknowledging his leadership in reducing the levels of violent crime in Philadelphia and easing the pain and frustration of many City residents, Eighth District City Council Candidate Verna Tyner today applauded Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey’s decision to remain at the helm of the Philadelphia Police Department.

“Under Commissioner Ramsey’s leadership, violent crime throughout the city has consistently fallen, officers have shown an unwavering commitment to solving the crimes that are committed, and a zero tolerance policy for police corruption has been implemented,” Verna said. “I believe that his dedication to making Philadelphia a safer, more secure place to live and work will greatly benefit the residents of the Eighth District.”

In an effort to assist the City in retaining successful and dedicated non-elected leaders like Commissioner

Ramsey, Tyner also proposed establishing Philadelphia’s Halt Our Leaders’ Departure (HOLD) program. Essentially a trust to be administered by an independently appointed Board of Directors, the HOLD program would seek to collect contributions from Philadelphia-based corporations, foundations and universities to be used to supplement the salaries of valuable non-elected public servants – such as City department heads and police or fire commissioners – who are being courted for opportunities that would take them away from the City.
