HARRISBURG– State Rep. Vanessa Lowery Brown, D-Phila., announced that the annual Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship program is open and accepting applicants for the 2013-14 school year.

The program awards two scholarships. Each one is worth one semester’s tuition at a State System of Higher Education university, approximately $2,500. The scholarships are renewable for the student’s entire four-year program. The deadline to apply is March 1.

To qualify, applicants must:

·       Be a high school senior

·       Have a grade-point average of at least 3.0

·       Be a legal resident of Pennsylvania

·       Plan to attend a Pennsylvania college, university or career school as a full-time student

·       Demonstrate community involvement and leadership

·       Demonstrate involvement in extracurricular activities

·       Demonstrate financial need.

Applicants also are required to submit an essay on the importance of Harrisburg in the Civil War and why it was the ultimate target of the Confederate Army, as well as the lasting impact of Gettysburg over the last 150 years. Applicants must also complete the FAFSA federal student aid form.

“As a House member, I am proud that we offer this opportunity to a few of our most deserving scholars,” Brown said. “It is well worth applying for, especially since it can be renewed for the student’s entire four-year college experience.”

Additional information and application materials for the House scholarship, as well as other scholarship opportunities, can be found at www.tfec.org.
