Councilman Johnson to host annual Community Appreciation Day on Saturday, August 26th

August 18, 2017 Category: Local Posted by:

Councilman Kenyatta Johnson will host his annual Community Appreciation Day on Saturday, August 26th in Point Breeze at Point Breeze Avenue and 22nd Street from 12PM-8PM. The event will feature multiple resources for residents including free food, a kid’s zone with mini-carnival rides and activities, local vendors providing information and educational resources about social services as well as merchandise, and a 500 bookbag giveaway to support families with their back-to-school shopping. Community awards and live entertainment are distributed throughout the afternoon.

Every year, community members are selected to be honored on stage at Community Appreciation Day before their peers and neighbors who have been working to improve the quality of life for Point Breeze and South Philadelphia residents. This year, Anthony Burrell, a creative director, dance choreographer, and actor from South Philadelphia will receive a citation and special “Living Legend” award.

Burrell, a graduate of University of the Arts, has worked extensively in the national entertainment industry, choreographed and performed in pivotal moments in dance entertainment, and is renowned for his ability to blend classical and commercial dance styles.

He most recently has worked extensively with Mariah Carey and Beyoncé on video, award show, and concert performances. He was part of the artistic team behind Beyoncé’s 2017 Grammy performance, Super Bowl 50 halftime show, The Formation World Tour, Lemonade film, and countless music videos.

Following a day full of giveaways and family fun, a live concert will feature Mr. Cheeks, Freeway, with VH1’s “Love & Hip Hop’s” Keyshia Cole as the headliner to close out the evening.

“Community Appreciation Day for me is about empowering and celebrating the community,” Councilman Johnson said. “We host it in the middle of Point Breeze, as opposed to elsewhere in the district, so some of these families and children who may not otherwise leave the neighborhood get the opportunity to participate in a safe day of family-friendly fun and activities right by their homes.”
