Luzerne Street between Whitaker Ave. and N. 5th St. to be renamed “Edison 64 Memorial Street”
On Friday May 27, 2016, the Thomas A. Edison High School/John C. Fareira Skills Center’s Memorial Day Observance featured a Street renaming and dedication ceremony in honor of the Edison 64.
Edison High School, formerly located at 8th St. and Lehigh Ave., lost sixty-four of its alumni during the Vietnam war, the highest number of casualties from the war experienced by any high school in the United States. In commemoration of the sacrifice of these young men and in recognition of the loss to the community, Luzerne Street between Whitaker Avenue and North 5th Street (in front of the new Edison High School located at 151 West Luzerne St.) will be renamed “Edison 64 Memorial Street.”
City Council Resolution No. 150422 effectuating the name change was introduced by Councilwoman Maria Quiñones Sánchez and was adopted by the City Council on May 7, 2015.
In the photos shown is Edison’s lovely Vietnam War Memorial Garden and the wall inside the school honoring the memory of the 64 students who lost their lives in Vietnam.
