On Tuesday, May 15, Mothers in Charge, an organization made up of the mothers of murdered children dedicated to bringing peace to Philadelphia’s streets, held its Ninth Annual Mothers Still Standing event. This year’s event attracted women from around the country who have suffered the same kind of pain and are turning that pain into power in their communities.

Among those honored with Mothers Still Standing awards were Ruth Donnelly, founding member of Mothers In Charge; Sharon Kelly, member of the Atlantic City Chapter of Mothers in Charge; Clemmie Greenlee, Nashville Peace Keepers, Nashville, Tenn., and Roxanna Green, CEO of the Christina Taylor-Green Foundation in Tuscon, Ariz. Green is the mother of Christina Taylor-Green, the 9-year-old girl that was visiting with former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords when she was shot during a public appearance. Christina was killed in the shooting.

Also honored by Mothers in Charge were: Brown’s Shop Rite Markets with the Corporate Partner for Peace award; The Mayor’s Office for Re-Integration Services for Ex-Offemders as a Community Partner for Peace; arts group Mamacity as a Mentoring Partner for Peace; Interfaith Peacewalk as a Ambassador for Peace; The Department of Behavioral Health as a Community Partner for Peace; and Marcia Hopkins was the winner of the Dorothy Johnson-Speight Vision for Peace Award.

Hopkins started out as an intern for Mothers in Charge after the death of her brother and has become a member of the organization’s staff.

The event was MC’d by NBC-10’s Lori Wilson.
