In an email communication to PFT members this week, PFT President Jerry T. Jordan announced that he did not seek reelection as head of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers.
President Jerry T. Jordan, who has served as PFT president since 2007, will work diligently to serve the remainder of his term in advance of his June 30 retirement.
From my career as an educator to my time as a building rep to a PFT staff representative and ultimately as president of this great union, I have worked every day to strengthen our union, to fight for the future of public education and of our democracy, to take on fights big and small, and to never stop believing in both the power of the individual and of the collective in making the world a better place,” Jordan said In his message to members. “The next several months will be busy ones for this union, and I remain fully committed to the work. Our team has been hard at work preparing contract proposals, and I have been reviewing every submission with care. As we prepare to enter negotiations, I want you to rest assured that I take the work in the months ahead seriously, and of course, will keep you informed and engaged as we move forward.”
In addition, Jordan shared exciting news about the transition with members.
“This evening, as per the Nomination and Election Procedures in adherence to the PFT Constitution, candidates had until 5 p.m. to submit their consent forms and petitions to run for the PFT Executive Board and/or to run as Delegates to either or both the AFT and AFTPA Conventions,” he said. “A representative of the American Arbitration Association was present and verified that only one slate, the Collective Bargaining (CB) Team submitted their candidacy. I share with you the exciting news and my congratulations to our next president, Arthur Steinberg. He, and the rest of the CB Team Slate, will take office July 1st. I look forward to ensuring a smooth transition.”
Jordan remains fully committed to the next several months of work leading this union. No further media requests regarding his retirement will be granted.
In conclusion, Jordan said what he often does: “The struggle continues.”
