Philadelphia’s new police commissioner Kevin Bethel announced Pedro Rosario as the city’s Deputy Police Commissioner on Wednesday. Rosario makes history as the first Latino to serve in that role in the department’s 225-year history.
“Rosario has been tapped by Commissioner Bethel to lead the Kensington Initiative, which will work to restore lawfulness and hope to the people of the Kensington community. Over his 29 years with PPD, D/C Rosario has dedicated his career to these neighborhoods, its people, and its future,” said a post on the police department’s Instagram page.
“Today is another step forward in delivering on our promise to make Philly the safest big City in America. Pedro Rosario will serve as the first Latino Deputy Police Commissioner in [Philadelphia Police Department] history!,” said Mayor Parker who tapped Rosario to lead her initiative to shut down the Kensington open-air drug market that plagues that section of the city for decades.
“Deputy Police Commissioner Pedro Rosario will focus his efforts on shutting down the open-air drug market in Kensington. I promised a more diverse Administration and Police Department that looks like the people that it serves, and this is an important step in the right direction,” continued Parker.
