Philly Drum Project, an organization dedicated to helping drummers in the city share gear, lessons, and beats, will host its first summer program, DrumPhil: a one-day drumset workshop for high school students. On Tuesday, August 11th, 12 Philly-area students who have been selected through an open application process will have the opportunity to participate in a group workshop, private lesson, expert lecture, and group composition session with the purpose of building inspiration, confidence, community, and drumming proficiency. The FREE workshop is designed to be accessible to all Philly-area students, regardless of financial situation. DrumPhil will take place on the campus of the University of the Arts in center city Philadelphia, where twelve of the best university instructors and professional drummers at the local and national level, including JP Bouvet (2011 Guitar Center Drum Off Champion), Steve McKie (Kindred, Jill Scott), Marc Dicciani (UArts), Jimmy Coleman (John Legend), Josh Orlando (University of Penn), Dan Monaghan (Temple University), Ricardo Lagomasino (Lithuania, Deleted Scenes) and Matt Scarano (Sun Step), will lead sessions throughout the day.
At 8pm that evening, students will perform their DrumPhil drumset trio compositions for family, friends, and community members in a free student recital at the Terra Building at 211 S. Broad St. (University of the Arts). The recital will also feature a performance from select instructors.
Funding for DrumPhil made possible by members of Philly Drum Project, The University of the Arts, HansenFutz, Remo Drumheads, Meinl Cymbals, Drum Workshop, World Cafe Live, and Pretzel Crisps.
