Gentleman Dandy attire, Derby Hats and Mint Juleps on full display
It’s been called the most exciting two minutes in sports. Enthusiasts will gather to watch the excitement of the 142nd Run for the Roses during the 2nd Annual Pathfinders Travel Magazine Derby Party on Saturday, May 7 3-7 p.m. at the Alma Mater Restaurant, located at 7165 Germantown Avenue in the Mt. Airy section of the city.
Male attendees will sport their best-looking gentleman dandy attire while everyone will stroll the red carpet in their finest Derby hats, one of the main traditions of the Kentucky Derby.
Philadelphia fashion columnist Elizabeth Wellington and Philadelphia Daily News columnist Jenice Armstrong will comment on the fashions as guests enjoy the official Derby drink, Mint Juleps.
Patrons attending the Pathfinders Travel Magazine Derby Party can enjoy their favorite stogies (another Derby tradition) and for the first time Cuban Cigars will be available. The main race, the actual “Run for the Roses”, doesn’t start until 6PM, but guests will have plenty of time to revel in the excitement of the betting on preliminary races on the big screen as well as party to music while enjoying special Derby Drinks and a Kentucky, chef-inspired menu.
“We won’t have a Millionaires Row (the seats that celebrities and the rich and famous spend thousands of dollars for at the Kentucky Derby), but we will special bottle service and we’ve invited lots of celebrities, politicians and Derby fans,” said Weller Thomas, co-publisher of Pathfinders Travel Magazine.
Story ideas can include the story of the Black Jockeys of the Kentucky Derby who were the first horsemen of America’s favorite horse race. This little-known story is a fascinating account of African American jockeys who won 13 of the first 15 Kentucky Derby races.
