On Thursday, Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams announced during a press conference that attorney Tariq El-Shabazz will be appointed as First Assistant District Attorney replacing George Mosee when he retires in December.
“For years I would speak to my mentor Jerry Mondesire, I would rely on him for advice, for him to scream at me, pray over me and now he has passed. Since that time I really relied on Tariq El-Shabazz and George Mosee our First Assistant District Attorney,” said Williams speaking with The SUN.
Williams spoke on why he chose El-Shabazz.
There was a vacancy in the Deputy of Investigations Division and Williams immediately thought of El- Shabazz who will begin that post starting September 6. In December, El-Shabazz will then become the highest ranking deputy when he begins his appointment as First Assistant.
“It was apparent to me that I should make [Shabazz] First Assistant when George Mosee retires in December,” said Williams after having conversations with El-Shabazz.
El-Shabazz, is a prominent litigator in Philadelphia trying over 1000 jury trials. El-Shabazz actually helped recruit Williams when he worked at the District Attorney’s office from 1988 to 1993.
“I’m humbled, tremendously excited. At this point I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get side by side with the District Attorney,” said El-Shabazz.
