The event — hosted by Homeless Memorial Philly — will take place on Thursday, December 19, 2019 from 5pm – 6pm at Thomas Paine Plaza, located at 1401 John F Kennedy Blvd. As the first official day of winter approaches, hundreds of Philadelphians will gather to remember those homeless and formerly homeless Philadelphians who died in 2019 and to call for an end to homelessness.
There has been much progress in Philadelphia in combating homelessness, but the crisis persists. The opioid epidemic is claiming hundreds of lives, and the City’s residents face the prospect of massive cuts in housing and healthcare. Many young people are also at risk of homelessness.
“We must continue to speak out about the struggles of people who experience homelessness, poverty, and addiction,” Homeless Memorial Philly stated on a Facebook post announcing the vigil. “We must all work together – including elected officials – to expand effective solutions and build a truly just society for all persons.”
