Over 16 million workers across country are working at current rate, increase to $10.10/hour would increase PA Wages, add thousands of jobs

With the holiday season in full swing, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), joined by a local worker and advocates, will call for an increase in the federal minimum wage to $10.10 per hour for over 700,000 Pennsylvania workers.

Over 16 million workers across the country are working at the current rate and an increase to $10.10 per hour would increase wages in Pennsylvania by over $1 billion and add thousands of jobs.

“Raising the minimum wage is about basic fairness and economic security for over Pennsylvania’s workers and families,” Senator Casey said. “Congress should have an up or down vote on raising the minimum wage.

Passing this bill will increase Pennsylvania’s GDP by over $1 billion and add thousands of jobs. It will have positive economic impacts for the entire state not just those working for the minimum wage.”

The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013 would:

• Raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 per hour in 3 annual steps of 95 cents each.

• Index the minimum wage to inflation (CPI).

• Raise the minimum wage for tipped workers from 29 percent ($2.13 per hour) to 70 percent of the regular minimum wage, in 6 or more annual steps of 95 cents each.

The legislation could get a vote in the coming weeks. If passed by Congress, this increase in the minimum wage would be the first passed since 2007.
