The Mu Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., held its annual James A. Minton Food Basket and Toy Drive to benefit deserving families in the Philadelphia region on December 13 and 14. In collaboration with Brown’s Family ShopRite (24th & Oregon Ave), which has been a local supporter of the food drive for the past few years and offers discounts on certain items.

Every year just before Christmas, the Mu Omega Chapter hosts the James A. Minton Food Basket and Toy Drive and partners with local officials such as State Representative Rosita Youngblood to reach out to area residents in an effort to make their holiday a little brighter.

“Our cardinal principles are manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift,”Coach Tre” Bell said about the annual event. “Uplift is something that we all need to do for the community, and in the state of the Black community, we need as many organizations to uplift everybody and get back to the right path. It’s all about community, love, brotherhood, and sisterhood.”

This generosity from the ShopRite company allows the Mu Omega Chapter to supply food baskets to 100 families. The food baskets were filled with items such as a turkey, stuffing, canned goods, desserts and much more.

Twenty baskets went to Melany Nelson, executive director  of the Northwest Victims Services, a grass roots non-profit agency created and dedicated to serving victims and witnesses to crime in the 5th, 14th, 35th, and 39th Police Districts. Food baskets also went to the “You’re Ok Foundation, ” which does excellent community work under the leadership of its executive director, Queen Sister Yoni Love Williams.

The offices of State Representatives Rosita Youngblood and Chris Rabb were truly appreciative as they identified deserving families that could benefit from this initiative.

Robin Torrence, who serves as the community school coordinator for the Franklin S. Edmonds Elementary School also gave holiday food baskets and toys to families belonging to that school community.

The drive was led by Brother Kevin “Coach Tre” Bell, who serves as the social action chairman of the Mu Omega Chapter, as well as Brothers Warren Montague, Oscar Turner, Larry Williams, Bobby James, Michael W. Andrews, Darrell Giles, Rodney Olgesby, Melvin Charlton, Jesse Reason and a host of other members.

Ms. Darisha Parker, legislative assistant for State Representative Youngblood, was in attendance to assist in the food basket and toy coordination, which was held at the Mu Omega Fraternity House.

When all was said and done, 100 families were blessed by the efforts of the members of the Mu Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and  its members, along with Chairman Bell. They are all  are excited about the new year and spearheading many more community service programs.
