Seven schools in Southeastern Pennsylvania to win a combined $20,000

High schools throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania are invited to participate in Shire’s Great Food Fight! Benefitting Philabundance to help raise food in support of families in need across the Greater Philadelphia region. All participating schools will have the opportunity to compete for a prize of $10,000, $5,000 or $1,000 while joining forces to achieve an ambitious goal: collect 100 tons of food – which is equivalent to 200,000 meals – for Philabundance over a two week period.

High school students, parents and faculty members can encourage their principals and school administrators to sign up now for this unique, region-wide food drive. In 2010, the first year of Shire’s Great Food Fight! Benefitting Philabundance, 18 schools collected 64 tons of food over the two week competition – making it one of the most successful efforts ever to raise food in the Greater Philadelphia region. The need for food assistance is up 66 percent over the past two years, and this community service project developed by Shire and Philabundance is designed to engage students while helping to eradicate hunger in the area.

“We are very excited to work in partnership with Shire on year two of the Great Food Fight!, and we encourage many more schools to step up and rally their students to collect food that will be used to help families across the Delaware Valley who are struggling to put healthy meals on their kitchen tables,” said Bill Clark, executive director of Philabundance.

Shire will award seven prizes: $10,000 to the school that raises the most food as measured in pounds, $5,000 for the school that collects the most food in pounds per student and $1,000 to the school in each of the five Southeastern Pennsylvania counties that collects the most food in pounds. The eligible counties in Shire’s Great Food Fight! Benefitting Philabundance are Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia.

The deadline for high schools to register for Shire’s Great Food Fight! Benefitting Philabundance is December 31, 2011. The collection drive runs February 15 – March 2, 2012. For more information visit here.
