Jimmie Reed returns to his culinary roots.

The North Carolina native, owner of both Little Jimmies Bakery Café and Little Jimmie’s Bake House on the 6600 block Germantown Avenue, has added southern style cuisine at his bake house location.

“Macaroni and cheese, fresh green beans, cabbage, okra and all that good stuff, that was the kind of food I was raised on in the south.”

These mouthwatering treats are what inspired him to offer southern cuisine at the bake house.lj-meat-loaf

However, he makes it clear–don’t call it soul food.

Reed prefers for his fresh-cooked hearty fare to be called “Little Jimmies Southern Style Home Cooked Meals.”

No worries, you can still get your fresh baked cakes, pies and other goodies at the bake house. And, yes the café across the street at 6669 is still popping with their café style grub and coffee.

I went stealth undercover and popped into the bake house to treat myself to some of Jimmie’s southern style home cooked offerings.

A small platter is $7 and a large is $9. Both come with two sides.

I opted for a large meatloaf platter with string beans and macaroni and cheese.

Fabulous.  It was very delicious and filling.

The bake house expanded menu also includes turkey wings, rosemary chicken, oven fried chicken, pork chops, okra and collard greens to name a few.  The daily menu will have the same offerings so you can experience a southern meal at your leisure with no worries if you don’t get everything you want in one visit.

“It will be a consistent menu because you want to build a base.  We might have seasonal items like turkey and stuffing around Thanksgiving time and different kind of pies,” says Reed.

If you’re wondering if everything is fresh cooked from scratch, a mandatory requirement for southern cuisine foodies, Reed verifies the authenticity.

“Nothing from the can, everything is made from scratch and also it’s all fresh,” says Reed.

“Matter of fact there is no can opener in this restaurant,” he adds jokingly adding that people don’t realize it’s cheaper to buy fresh food.

Come on through to treat yourself to some southern cuisine.  Your belly will thank you.

Little Jimmie’s Bake House is open Monday through Saturday noon to 8 p.m.  For more information call 267-331-8274 go to www.littlejimmiesbakery.com
