Loraine Ballard Morrill will be the keynote speaker at the third annual Women in Media Conference, which will be held at Impact Hub, 1227 N. 4th St. on Saturday, Sept. 19. Ballard Morrill is the news and community affairs director for iHeart Media’s six Philadelphia stations including Power 99FM and WDAS FM.
Women in Media Philly was started by a group of millennial women to empower, equip and encourage women with the means to enter fields ranging from journalism to marketing and public relations. This year, WIM Philly is challenging women in media with three tasks: 1) to flood the media and social media with women-focused stories, 2) commit to produce a project that brings positive attention to a woman in media or women-related issues/causes and 3) work together to help elevate women behind the media scenes over the next 12 months.
“The bottom line is this: Overwhelmingly, men still dominate media. Women are 51 percent of the population—but hardly equal partners in telling the story. Society is best served when the media accurately reflects the population,” said Julie Burton, president of the Women’s Media Center.
This year’s conference will also feature interactive workshops, and a panel discussion featuring Sabrina Vouvolias, managing editor of Al Dia News, and Desiree Peterkin-Bell Representative for the City of Philadelphia and Director of Communications for Mayor Michael Nutter.
